CARITAS Slovakia and STOP Human Trafficking! attend the POHODA festival.

This year, STOP Human Trafficking again attended POHODA, the largest Slovak multi-genre festival, from the 6th to the 8th of July and counted about 30 thousands participants in attendance.
Together with other NGOs, Caritas Slovakia showcased projects which are underway around the world, as well as in Slovakia. The STOP Human Trafficking project was one of the main themes which people were impressed with.
The concept was to show two figurines – one representing a victim of human trafficking,  exploited for the purpose of forced prostitution and the other figurine dressed as a woman of Islamic belief. These two figurines symbolised the extent of the range of our charity services, regardless of client´s faith, race or appearance.
Many young people stopped by, had a talk with the representatives and showed their interest and support for the work.
Jana Urbanova, CARITAS Slovakia STOP Human Trafficking Preventions Campaign Coordinator, shared that they evaluated this experience as time of mutual inspiration and are already looking  forward to the next year´s festival!

UNICEF report on increased incidences of use of children as ‘human bombs, ’ in north-east Nigeria.

RENATE is currently conducting research in a number of European countries, in the area of child trafficking. While the more common instances of trafficking centre around trafficking and exploitation for labour, begging and/or the sex industry, it is alarming to read of the use of children as ‘human bombs, ’ as reported by UNICEF in August.
‘’UNICEF is extremely concerned about an appalling increase in the cruel and calculated use of children, especially girls, as ‘human bombs’ in northeast Nigeria. Children have been used repeatedly in this way over the last few years and so far this year, the number of children used is already four times higher than it was for all of last year.

Since 1 January 2017, 83 children have been used as ‘human bombs’; 55 were girls, most often under 15 years old; 27 were boys, and one was a baby strapped to a girl.’’

E-Bulletin No. 11. September 2017: Possibilities for grant-aid!

E-Bulletin No. 11. September 2017: Possibilities for grant-aid!
Dear friends,
Our colleagues at UNANIMA in their recent update, referred to the possibilities for NGO’s to avail of funds from the United Nation’s Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons.
The communication is as follows:
” The UN’s Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons has issued an invitation to NGOs aiding victims of human trafficking to submit a request for funding for their work. If you are working with this population and have a specific project that could benefit from a small grant, you are encouraged to submit a proposal, following the guidelines available in English, Spanish, French, and Arabic in our online file, Trust Fund for TIP. Also in the file are a template proposal and the forms to be submitted with each proposal.”
We hope that this notification is helpful and that you will find it encouraging as you plan your work.
With every good wish,
Anne.

Dear friends,
I hope that you have been able to rest over the summer and that the final days of August are filled with fond memories of an enjoyable summer.
The Global Migration Compact takes place early next week, in Austria, Vienna and if any of you are attending, perhaps you might like to contact Sr. Gabriella Bottani, CMS, Co-ordinator of Talitha Kum.
Sr. Gabriella has reached out to invite you to meet with her, as a means of mutual support together and to possibly devise a common statement together, in solidarity at the end of the meeting.
It would also be helpful if you let me know that you are going, then we can share some of the news from this meeting with the other members. Thank you for this.

Given the tight timeframe, you can make direct contact with Sr. Gabriella at the following address:
Uisg.talithakum@gmail.com

With every good wish,

ANDANTE Study Days, Strasbourg, 20th – 24th April 2018. Theme: “Migration in and to Europe from a woman's perspective.”

Andante, the European Alliance of Catholic Women’s Organisations, will hold Study Days about “Migration in and to Europe from a woman’s perspective” in Strasbourg, on April 20-24th 2018.
Andante have two aims for the study days, which promise to be most interesting:
Firstly, we will talk about the impact of migration on the lives of women. Is migration threatening to us? In what ways does it touch our soul?
The second aim refers to Andante’s representation at the Conference of International NGO’s of the Council of Europe.  The study days will be an opportunity to experience the work of Andante at the Council of Europe, especially on the subject of migration.
All participants will have the opportunity to visit the council of Europe. If they want, they can arrange to meet their government’s representatives or the parliamentary representatives of their country at the Council of Europe, or to attend the debates of the Council of Europe, subject to local arrangements at the Council of Europe building, which is due to undergo structural works in the spring of 2018.
Check out  http://www.andante-europa.net/index.php/en/news-en/   for notification of registration, which begins in autumn 2017.
Save the date!

Season of Creation, 1st September – 4th October, 2017.

Commenced in 2015, Pope Francis called on Catholics to join in the World Day of Prayer for Creation on the 1st of September, a day first proclaimed by the Orthodox Church and now celebrated by many denominations.
In the 2016 Papal letter for the Day of Prayer for Creation, Pope Francis talked about a “Time of Creation” or Season of Creation, the five weeks between the Day of Prayer on the 1st of September and the Feast of St. Francis on the 4th of October, each year onwards. .
The congregation of sisters of Mercy (Mercy International Association) have kindly shared with us their beautiful calendar to mark this very special time. It contains both an image and a reflection for each day, beginning on the 1 of September.
Let’s join Pope Francis and a world-wide network, in praying with and for creation during this special time!
