A RENATE Training on The Intervention & Integration of Victims of Trafficking in Human Beings for the members has now been organized and will take place in Madrid, Spain, from Sunday, 31st May – till Friday, 5th June 2015. We expect 33 participants from twelve European countries. All trainers are experts in their field.
The fifth annual Slovakian JobExpo took place on the 29th & 30th of April 2015, at the Agrokomplex in Nitra. Around 140 exhibitors presented at the jobs fair and offered work to visitors. This is the second year that the Slovak Catholic Charity participated and used the Expo as an awareness-raising opportunity using its Gift Box Campaign – People are not for sale. Since exploitation and forced labour are some of the aspects of human trafficking, the job fair is a good opportunity to draw the attention of visitors to this dangerous phenomenon, in the belief that awareness raising is critically important as a preventative measure. The Fair was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Interior, who provide lectures for the general public, on the issue of trafficking as well as informative lectures for high school students.
Conference in Slovakia helps in Raising Awareness to Prevent Human Trafficking On 23 April 2015, “Stop Human Trafficking” in Caritas Slovakia and local RENATE members actively contributed to the first interdisciplinary conference on socio-pathological concerns amongst children, youth and adults. The conference entitled “Social Pathology Amongst Youth” / SPAY 2015 / organized by the College of Health and Social Work Vol. Elizabeth and Pan European University with the participation of representatives from the academic and scientific institutions from Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The Conference programme explored seven specialized sections. Specific emphasis was given to the most problematic socio-pathological phenomena in our society among children and young people. The following aspects were considered:
Addiction
Bullying and cyberbullying
Harassment and abuse of refugees and migrants
Prostitution and human trafficking
Children’s problem behaviours such as truancy, delinquency, crime, violence and aggression
Sr. Bohdana Bezáková, CJ – member of RENATE – presented a workshop on the project entitled “Prevention of trafficking in Slovakia.” The film Two little girls was presented as part of the workshop to conference delegates. The presentation was followed by questions and discussions Jana Urbanová and Miroslava Víglašská, Caritas Slovakia staff and members of RENATE, presented information materials at the Conference and also presented the film Two little girls with subtitles for those who were unable to attend the workshop.
Since 2014, the New Project URAT in Albania, has led more than forty awareness-raising training seminars on human trafficking. Managed and funded by the NGO Mary Ward Loreto in Albania, the project is a collaboration with several other organisations present in Albania, e.g. the Peace Corps, the NGO Different and Equal, the IRCA (Institute of Romani Culture in Albania) and De Nobi Te Gruas Shqiptare. The project focused primarily on those who are socially and economically marginalised, the most vulnerable in Albania, who need protection against different forms of exploitation, including human trafficking. Black Tears Project Fundacion de Solidaridad Amaranta, Spain and member of RENATE, is pleased to announce that the art exhibition entitled ‘’The Black Tears,’’ will be held at The Other Art Fair, at Victoria House, Southampton Row, London, WC1B 4DA. The objective of the Black Tears Project is to raise social awareness and funds for two organisations: Proyecto Esperanza which combats human trafficking in Spain and Amaranta Foundation which combats sexual slavery of women and girls in Asia (Siliguri, India). Since June 2013, the Black Tears Project has brought together 2,245 women across 46 countries to create one monumental tapestry. Following 8980 working hours of stitching and sewing, the completed tapestry will now be exhibited internationally and will be launched in the UK, at The Other Art Fair, this April. At the nucleus of the tapestry lies a woman curled up on a bench, her heart ‘stopped by grief’. She is surrounded by hundreds of blue sewn canvases, each 15x15cm square; a product of meticulous care and skill from women across the world. These canvases (‘tears’) appear to multiply and spread, to create a magnificent spectacle and an artwork measuring 14mx2m. The Other Art Fair provides an opportunity to get exposure to a large number of people, with the Fair being publicised in the print media such as The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Time Out and many more publications. The Presentation Sisters opened a Centre in 2004 which includes a Pre-school. This clip shows Sr. Anne collecting children from the outlying Roma settlements 3km from the town and providing transport for them to attend the Pre-school. Two Little Girls at the Nano Nagle Centre_1 Second week of March, the Team of Caritas Slovakia travelled with the Two Little Girls Campaign to the east of Slovakia, the region with the highest occurrence of human trafficking cases. They held a workshop in Spišské Podhradie in the Nano Nagle Centre, a place for Romani women, children and youth from families of difficult situations. The centre is run by the Presentation Sisters. Two short films were screened to introduce the topic of modern slavery. The films were followed by questions to make sure children had understood the main idea. They also asked a lot of questions that leaded to mutual discussion. Caritas Team brought them the most important information about risks and dangers of trafficking in an accessible way. Then the children were divided into two groups and asked to list the right and wrong signs of a relationship between boy and girl. After that two of the children were encouraged to perform a role play where one of them tried to lure the other one into a dream job abroad. The Missing Persons’ Families Support Centre in Lithuania (member of RENATE), organised a round table discussion on best practices in the prevention of human trafficking. The event took place in the British Embassy in Vilnius on the 26th February 2015. In addition to sharing best practice, participants learned about the United Kingdom’s organisations which are helping victims of trafficking. Twenty two delegates attended, representing key organisations such as the Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office, the Lithuanian Police, the Vilnius City Municipality, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vilnius City Social Support Centre, Children’s Rights Protection and Adoption Service.
From 9th until 16th March 2015, the Working Board of RENATE have their annual meeting in Durrës, Albania. It is planned that during this time there will be an opportunity to experience the work of the Albanian people working in the field of anti-trafficking and to learn from them of the many challenges which they face and the actions being taken. The Working Board is privileged to have the opportunity to become exposed to a new cultural reality. The Working Board of RENATE will be strategically planning for the future, addressing the question of internal structures, communications, training programmes, finance, rapid response on behalf of our beneficiaries in the field, and ensuring that a realistic plan of action is in place which can be implemented over the next calendar year. We would like to thank our generous donors who enabled the implementation of the second year of our Action Plan and for continuing this support into the future.
Bakhita’s Prayer The Ten Ten Theatre at Tristan Bates Theatre in Covent Garden, London, premièred the documentary film Bakhita’s Prayer on the 8th of February 2015, in honour of Saint Bakhita and to draw attention to the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Trafficking. Bakhita’s Prayer is a twenty six minute documentary film which follows a group of nineteen year old students from Sacred Heart School in Hammersmith, West London, who are on a quest to understand the issue of Modern Slavery and what they can do to stop it. The students are taken on a journey which includes watching the powerful TenTen play This is my Body; meeting Cardinal Vincent Nichols, to discuss The Bakhita Initiative; deepening an understanding of modern slavery with Sr. Patricia Mulhall, representative of TRAC and member of RENATE; talking to a survivor of trafficking in the UK and learning about the life and spirituality of Saint Josephine Bakhita.
