Ending Human Trafficking by 2030: The Role of Global Partnerships

At the invitation of the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, Sister Imelda Poole, IBVM, President of RENATE, was amongst a distinguished panel of speakers, invited to present at the Conference entitled Ending Human Trafficking by 2030: The Role of Global Partnerships in Eradicating Modern Slavery. The Conference co-organised by the Santa Marta Group, named after Pope Francis’ Vatican residence and founded in 2014, aims to strengthen and coordinate the global response to combatting human trafficking and all forms of modern slavery and to galvanise the coordination necessary to implement Targets 5.2, 8.7 and 16.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Imelda outlined the extent of the work of RENATE and the many Woman Religious with their co-workers, working across 24 European countries to end the slavery of human trafficking.

RENATE President amongst Distinguished Panelists at the UN in NYC

 

Imelda Poole, IBVM, President of RENATE, was invited to speak at the UN on “Ending Human Trafficking by 2030: The Role of Global Partnerships in Eradicating Modern Slavery.”
You might like to tune in to the UN website webtv.un.org on April 7th, 2016, from 15.00-18.30 (United States Eastern Standard Time), to follow the event which is going to be streamlined. The European time equivalent is 20:00 – 23:30 GMT (e.g. London, Dublin) and 21:00 – 00:30 GMT+1 (e.g. Amsterdam, Berlin, Bratislava, Prague, Warsaw). It will be an opportunity to hear the President of RENATE and an array of other distinguished panelists invited by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. This conference is co-organized by the Santa Marta Group and the full programme involves input from 19 speakers, as per the attached schedule.
The Holy Father Pope Francis will send a personal message to all present. Cardinal Nichols of Westminster, Ms. Mira Sorvino, the UN Goodwill Ambassador against Human Trafficking, UK’s first Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Mr. Kevin Hyland and the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Mogens Lykketoft, will keynote the conference. The UN Secretary-General is also invited.
It is a great privilege for RENATE that our President is amongst the array of international and United Nations speakers.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December 2015

 

“This year’s International Day for the Abolition of Slavery comes as the international community is intensifying efforts to eradicate poverty and forge a post-2015 development agenda. In pursuing these goals, it is vital that we give special consideration to ending modern-day slavery and servitude which affects the poorest, most socially excluded groups – including migrants, women, discriminated ethnic groups, minorities and indigenous peoples.
There has been important progress in the last year. A number of countries have acted to combat slavery through stronger domestic legislation and greater coordination. More and more businesses are working to ensure their activities do not cause or contribute to contemporary forms of slavery in the workplace and their supply chains.”

Message for the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2 December 2013
The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December, marks the date of the adoption, by the General Assembly of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (-> resolution 317(IV) of 2 December 1949).
The focus of this day is on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage, slavery at sea and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.
These types of slavery are global problems and contravene Art. 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that ‘’…no one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.’’
A number of awareness-raising activities are taking place worldwide, to mark the day.

International Day of the Girl Child, 11th October, 2015

 

On the 19th of December, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170, declaring the 11th of October as the International Day of the Girl Child.
The day promotes girls’ human rights and helps raise awareness about all issues concerning gender inequality worldwide.
“In 2015, girls in the first decade of their lives are more likely to enrol in primary school, receive key vaccinations and are less likely to suffer from health and nutrition problems than were previous generations” (www.un.org)
While acknowledging the progress that has been made by the global community in improving the lives of girls in the first decade of their lives, much more work needs to be done to support girls to safely navigate their way through adolescence, ensuring they access quality education, access full information and services related to puberty and reproductive health and acquire abilities to protect themselves from gender-based violence.
Through informing and empowering adolescent girls and young women, RENATE believes it is possible to reduce the numbers who fall victim to human trafficking and exploitation.

UN Commission on the Status of Women Conference, 9th – 20th March 2015

 

Twenty years after the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, at the Fourth World Conference of Women in 1995, the U N Commission on the Status of Women has as its central theme at this year’s Conference ‘’Implementing the Beijing Platform for action.’’
The Conference will inform and facilitate discussions on the current challenges that affect the implementation of the Declaration, the achievement of gender equality, the empowerment of women and much, much more over the twelve days, including trafficking and exploitation.
Of particular interest will be the seminars and workshops on Humanitarian Actions; Ending Violence against Women and due concerns for the trafficking of women and girls as ‘’weapons of war’’ in war-torn Syria & Iraq.
