The RENATE Core Group are delighted to present two forthcoming online RENATE training sessions focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), technology, and the growing digital realities impacting the fight against human trafficking and exploitation.
These sessions will take place on:
Thursday 28 May | 09:30–12:30 (UK) / 10:30–13:30 (CET)
Tuesday 2 June | 09:30–12:30 (UK) / 10:30–13:30 (CET)
This training comes at a particularly significant moment, coinciding with the publication of Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, concerning the preservation of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence.
As AI technologies continue to expand at an unprecedented pace, those engaged in combating human trafficking and exploitation are increasingly challenged to understand the ways technology is being used to recruit, manipulate, exploit, and control vulnerable persons. These two sessions aim to strengthen awareness, understanding, and practical engagement with these emerging realities.
Session One – Thursday 28 May
We are privileged to welcome Valentina López-Yanes, Assistant Project Officer at the OSCE Office of the Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.
Valentina will address:
- The role of technology, including generative AI, in changing Trafficking in Human Beings (THB)
- Identifying and responding to tech-facilitated THB
- Awareness raising and prevention
- Advocacy and policy engagement
- Technology misuse by traffickers
- Case studies involving AI, generative AI, deep fakes, and synthetic identities
This session will provide valuable insight into the evolving digital landscape and the growing misuse of AI technologies by traffickers.
Session Two – Tuesday 2 June
Our second session welcomes Natalia Colmenar Calvo, Coordinator for Awareness Raising and Training in the Women and Anti-Trafficking Area at Diaconía España.
Natalia will offer an in-depth exploration of the functioning of OnlyFans agencies, including:
- Their operational logic
- Recruitment and control mechanisms
- The economic and financial structures underpinning these agencies
- The exploitation risks connected to content-sharing platforms
Drawing on her expertise, Natalia will examine how digital platforms and emerging technologies are increasingly being weaponised to exploit and traffic vulnerable people, particularly young people whose self-esteem, emotional vulnerability, and capacity for independent decision-making are often deliberately targeted.
Participants are asked to register in advance in order to receive the Zoom link for these online sessions.
